De Meteoritical Society van het British Museum NH in London is de enige instelling die meteorieten kan homologeren. Daar worden alle meteorieten centraal gedocumenteerd: alle vondsten van verkenningen op Antartica, in de woestijn en alle historische gevallen en vondsten.
De gegevens worden getoetst, genummerd of benoemd, erkend en in het jaarlijks verschijnende Meteoritical Bulletin gepubliceerd.

De erkenningsprocedure is strikt gedefinieerd.
Een stuk van elke meteoriet, samen met alle bekende bijbehorende gegevens, moet worden ingediend bij een van de weinige gespecialiseerde universiteitslaboratoria die door het MetSoc worden erkend.
Het laboratorium snijdt vervolgens dunne plakken af om de textuur en samenstelling microscopische te evalueren en vergelijken. Dan volgt er een algemene chemische analyse worden belangrijkste mineralen en isotopen gemeten.
Alle verzamelde informatie is samengevat in een rapport, samen met het voorstel aan welke subklasse van meteoriet het stuk moet worden toegewezen. Dit wordt voorgelegd aan het Nomenclature Committee van de MetSoc.
Voor verder onderzoek moet er extra materiaal worden bewaard. Het Nomenclature Committee bestaat uit vooraanstaande internationale meteorietspecialisten die de gegevens analyseren op plausibiliteit en vervolgens unaniem het rapport aanvaarden, verwerpen of besluiten dat verdere analyse moet worden uitgevoerd.
Als de meteoriet wordt erkend krijgt hij een naam of een nummer en alle basis- en kerngegevens worden gepubliceerd in het halfjaarlijks Meteoritical Bulletin - het standaardreferentiewerk voor meteorieten.
De Meteoritical Society, evenals de betrokken laboratoria, gaan niet-commerciële te werk.
Aanvullende garantie: de fabrikant is lid van de International Meteorite Collectors Association. Deze vereniging garandeert de authenticiteit van het materiaal dat door zijn leden wordt verkocht.

The data are examined, numbered or named, and are recognized and published in the annual Meteoritical Bulletin.

The recognition procedure is strictly defined.
A piece from each meteorite, along with all known find data, has to be submitted to one of the few specialized university laboratories recognized by the MetSoc.
The laboratory then makes thin sections of the piece for microscopic evaluation of the texture and composition and for comparison, and a general chemical analysis is carried out and the key minerals and important isotopes are measured.
All the information gathered is summarized in a report, together with the proposal to which subclass of meteorite the piece should be assigned, and this is submitted to the Nomenclature Committee of the MetSoc.
Additional material must be stored for further research. The Nomenclature Committee is made up of leading international meteorite specialists who analyse the data for plausibility and then unanimously accept or reject the report or decide that further analysis should be carried out.
If the meteorite is recognised, it is given a name or a number and all the basic and key data are published in the biannual Meteoritical Bulletin - the standard reference for meteorites.
The Meteoritical Society, as well as the laboratories involved, works on a non-commercial basis.
Additional assurance: The manufacturer is a member of the International Meteorite Collectors Association, which guarantees the authenticity of the material sold by its members.
